Exploring Purpose & Your Career

Entering 2026 there’s a theme and question that is top of mind for many. What is my purpose? Maybe you feel stuck or trapped. But you’re not failing in an outward sense, there’s just not a lot of fulfilment in your job. It can feel like you’re going through the motions; creating frustration and wanting more meaning in what you do.

If this is familiar to you, you’re not alone. It’s very normal as you grow and change, that your original definition of success; what used to drive you or the way you’ve worked, no longer fits. In the beginning of your career perhaps you were driven by external hallmarks of success; working for a strong brand, promotions, salary increases and praise for your performance. Now, you want to do something more meaningful to you.

This is a very positive sign. It means you’re ready to be more intentional and considered in what you do for work. There’s a logical and considered way to do this. You don’t need to blow up your career. It includes exploring how to best align your unique skills and strengths to your work. As a result, both your contribution and enjoyment increase. Fulfilment is found there.

Ask yourself:

  • What aspects of my career to date have energised me?

  • What drains me?

  • Where am I being asked to grow?

  • Is my work aligned to my values?

  • What is most important to me at this time? …This last question is an important one, what you do for work has got to support what’s currently important to you and your commitments more broadly.

When you’re doing work that feels aligned, you’re going to be happier, and recent research released by Harvard University shows that happier people, are more successful. The key to doing work that is aligned is ensuring you’re working to your strengths, natural talents, and that you resonate with its purpose. This is where both enjoyment and contribution are maximised. Until you are clear on your purpose, your career change is directionless.
